The STIHL MS 400 C-M is the world’s first chainsaw to feature a magnesium piston, combining innovative design with outstanding cutting power. At the heart of the MS 400 C-M is a 66.8 cc STIHL 2-MIX engine that delivers 4.0 kW of power and 4.1 Nm of torque – a clear step up from the MS 362 C-M. The magnesium piston is 14% lighter than a comparable aluminium piston, ensuring faster acceleration and contributing to the saw’s superb efficiency. With a power-to-weight ratio of just 1.45 kg per kilowatt and a powerhead weight of 5.8 kg, the MS 400 C-M is designed to be both powerful and highly manageable during long hours of forestry work.
 
The saw is equipped with M-Tronic 3.0 engine management, which electronically regulates ignition timing and fuel metering, automatically adjusting to external conditions such as temperature, altitude and fuel quality. This guarantees consistent power and reliability without the need for manual carburettor adjustments. Operation is simplified with a single start position on the combi lever and a stop function that allows quick restarts when the machine is warm.
 
Durability and easy maintenance are central to the design. The HD2 filter, made from fine PET material, is oil- and water-repellent and provides excellent protection against fine dust. Combined with pre-separation routing and a compensator in the carburettor, this long-life air filter system ensures longer service intervals and consistent performance. For user comfort, the STIHL anti-vibration system significantly reduces vibration levels at the handles, while the decompression valve makes starting smoother and less strenuous.
 
The MS 400 C-M also incorporates practical features to support daily use, including side-mounted chain tensioning for quick and secure adjustments, captive nuts on the sprocket cover to prevent loss during maintenance, and tool-free fuel and oil caps for fast refuelling. The STIHL Ematic chain lubrication system and controlled-delivery oil pump reduce overall oil consumption while ensuring precise lubrication, with the option to increase oil flow when using longer bars or working in particularly dry conditions.
